COASTALCARE HEALTH AND COMMUNITY CENTRE
Delivery essential community health and social services now and into the future.....
Welcome to CoastalCare - Haumaru ki Tai
Coastal Taranaki Health Trust was established in June 2006. Mr Dan Holmes was concerned about the status of health services on the Coast and gathered together a small group of people to seek solutions.
After much research and consultation, the idea of a central health hub gathered momentum when one of the town’s GPs retired in 2010, and the second GP indicated that his site was becoming unsuitable.

The Trust became confident that creating a “home” for everyone involved in primary health, social and emergency services that encouraged a holistic, collaborative and integrated approach to service delivery was a winning solution, particularly for isolated rural communities in need.
The dream of a one stop, multi-purpose health and social wellbeing facility came to fruition three years ago when CoastalCare was opened - debt free, purpose built and future proofed. At the opening, Hon Dr Jonathon Coleman, the Minister of Health, said “You have created something extremely significant, this innovative project is in line with my plans for health in New Zealand, what we want to do is provide more care for people closer to their homes. This is going to put a lot of heart into the community and very importantly leave a major legacy for the next generations. The quality and scope is something the community should be proud of.”
CoastalCare now houses a GP practice but is also home to 26 different service providers – everything from a pharmacy, Plunket services, Maori health organisations, St John ambulance and NZ Post. It includes counselling provision, district health board services, dental services, podiatry, budget advice, foodbank, transportation service, audiology and soon an optometrist will be joining the comprehensive range of services.
For Coastal Taranaki this represents a true hub or one-stop ‘shop’ of health and wellbeing.
