What Opunake has to offer
With one of Taranaki’s best surf beaches, Opunake is a favoured seaside destination. Whether you’re a surfer, swimmer, windsurfer, fisherman or simply enjoy sun-baking and sand-strolling, Opunake is ideally situated on the coast half way between New Plymouth and Hawera. Drive along the coast hugging 105 km stretch of road known as Surf Highway 45 and be up close and personal with the Mighty Mount Taranaki on one side, while farmland and ocean views on the other prove the mountain really does meet the sea.
Opunake has a population of about 6980 (Estimated by STDC July 2017) but is boosted considerably during the summer months by holidaymakers. Its cafes, colourful murals, shopping centre and surfie character make Opunake a great place to discover and no matter which time of the year you’re visiting, you’ll feel right at home.

Things to see and do while visiting Opunake
Opunake Beach Holiday Park
Opunake Beach Holiday Park has a beachfront location in a sheltered sandy bay surrounded by crimson Pohutukawa trees, it’s a popular summer camping spot for families, couples and groups! The beach is safe for swimming and patrolled in summer by volunteer lifeguards. There are free barbeques, excellent picnic areas on the beachfront and a children’s playground and paddling pool nestled in the campground which offers a range of accommodation less than 50 metres from the beach. The beach is also only a short walk from the centre of town.
Surfing on the Coast
The Taranaki coastline is home to countless classic surf breaks. Breaks like Stent Road, the Kumara Patch and Awawhata Road have become legendary in New Zealand surfing over the decades and continue to attract surfers from around the world. No matter what the swell or wind direction, it's almost always offshore somewherew along the Surf Highway.
Opunake Lake
The Lake is perfect for family walks, feeding the ducks, or for the more energetic take the boat out, waterski or try your hand at trout fishing.
Opunake Walkway
The longest of the formal South Taranaki walks. It runs from Opunake Lake to Te Namu Pa. There are comprehensive maps for your information at either end of the walk. The Te Namu Pa map is by the entrance to the Opunake Cemetery Heritage wall. Visit our separate webpage for more information on this walkway and others in South Taranaki.

There are currently 34 outstanding murals that grace buildings and walls in Opunake. Collect a map and more information from Opunake LibraryPlus and Information Centre.
Everybody's Theatre
Everybody's Theatre in Opunake is an elegant historic theatre in Taranaki which has been restored to it's former glory. The historic building, completely restored inside and outside, complimented with the latest digital screen technology and has brand new luxury seating upstairs. In addition to all the latest new releases, the theatre also hosts boutique nights, playing a selection of classic, foreign and fringe films. Movies play on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 7pm, with a matinee on Wednesday and Saturday at 1 pm. Movie night at Everybody's Theatre...a great night out guaranteed.
Rutherford Lighthouse Museum
The Historic Cape Light and Museum at the end of Bayly Road SH45, Opunake is a specially designed replica lighthouse housing the 1850’s Fresnil Prismatic Light that powered the Cape Egmont Light until 1999.
This carefully restored light is now in full working order in the lamp room on top of the replica lighthouse building and can be seen by appointment. The lower levels of the replica lighthouse house an interesting collection of memorabilia and displays from the days when Lord Rutherford, then a boy, lived close by at his father’s flax mill. Open Saturday, Sunday and Monday's 11am - 3pm.
Surf Highway 45 Touring Route
Let the pace slow down, relax and enjoy the views as you take the western route around the Mountain. Lots to stop and see, roads that inevitably meander to the sea on one side, and winding roads to take you through farmland to the mountain on the other.
Community Swimming Pool
The Community pool is volunteer operated which has a 25m heated covered pool plus three small pools within the one complex. The pool is open from the start of the school holidays between terms three and four until the end of term one holidays, funding permitted.
Opunake Cottage Resthome
Situated under the mountain (Mounga) and on the coastline (Tangaroa) beside the Opunake Lake, the Cottage provides a home for those who need assistance with day to day living in a warm and friendly, homely environment. They strive to make people feel they belong there and in an environment they are happy to call home.
