In June 2006 a group of concerned people came together to ensure there would be a primary health and medical facility in Opunake for the benefit of the Coastal Taranaki Community and so The Coastal Taranaki Health Trust was established.
A considerable amount of research and consultation was carried out with visits made to Patea, Eltham and Waitara Medical Centres. At this time Opuake had two GP practises, however, soon after The Trusts formation one of the GP's sold his practise to our current GP.
After hosting a successful community meeting to provide general information on nutrition plus drugs and alcohol, the Trust went into recess in 2008. During 2010 The Trust was approached by a local person who asked for their support in a proposal to seek funding under the umbrella of the Coastal Taranaki Health Care pilot programme for youth and adult mental health in the South Taranaki Area.
Opunake's current GP had also contacted The Trust explaining the difficulties in providing appropriate medical care for the community in his existing premises which were leased to him and subject to landbank conditions. Attracting more Doctors to the rural location along with the existing Medical buildings poor state of repair was also becoming a major concern.
PHO restructuring was underway, and funding was being directed into communities so it became an ideal time to look at a facility that could bring all the various umbrella groups under one roof in an integrated purpose built facility.
Local people embraced the project and supported the fundraising effort, one charity event for example, raised $70,000 and in addition pledges and individual donations were made. Construction began on the 900sqm building in May 2014 with work completed in April 2015. For Coastal Taranaki it represents a true hub or one-stop shop of health and wellbeing.
The project cost approximately $2.25 million and has been supported by the TSB Community Trust and the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund.

Mavis Hepworth Video
Mavis Hepworth (nee Corkill) pictured with younger brothers Rodger and Bernie around 1930.
Mavis spent the first 33 years of her life on the family farm at Pihama, both helping her ‘dear old dad’ on the farm, as there were no tractors, and assisting with the raising of her sibilings. She then moved to Auckland, after her younger brothers married, for about 30 years before returning to New Plymouth for the remaining 32 years with the last 3 weeks at the Opunake Cottage Rest Home.
The early years at Pihama were the most treasured times in her life and hence the reason she stayed loyal to this community for the remainder of her lifetime.
